Sailing kit list

These are suggestions for guests and crew onboard Nerdvana 2. For most of the time T-shirts, shorts and bare feet will suffice: There are of course always exceptions and generally the longer the passage the more warm clothing you should bring. At least one complete change of clothes is advisable in case we get hit by a downpour plus an extra layer if we are night sailing (not often unless we are repositioning)

Mediterranean

Summer

Between May and October you can generally expect warm weather – there will be the occasional shower but you can always shelter down below. Afternoons can be quite windy though – so a wind-proof jacket is advised.

  • A fleece and a light sweater
  • Swimming costumes. There are some diving masks, snorkels and fins onboard (but not enough for everybody)
  • T-shirts and shorts. A couple of long-sleeved T-shirts might help keep the sun off
  • Light weight wind and shower proof day-sailing jacket or cagoule
  • Casual clothes for evenings at restaurants
  • Sunglasses, hat, sun screen, moisturisers and lip salve. There are some spare slime line and sailing gloves onboard. A small torch when going ashore at night can be useful
  • Soft soled non-slip shoes to wear on deck (these must be NON-MARKING) and might get soaked – deck shoes are fine as are many trainers. Flip-flops can be dangerous on deck and ARE NOT RECOMMENDED. A pair of plastic shoes for clambering over rocks to attach mooring chains and lines are a very good idea
  • Toiletries and wash gear. There is a small hair dryer and also a small iron and board
  • Passport (I need to know the number in advance and dates etc plus let me know if you are not an EU citizen), RYA log book (if you want me to sign it) and any sailing qualifications
  • Bring an E 1-11 health card and you should ideally have travel and medical insurance too! If bad weather forces us to change route or delays us there may be replacement flights to pay for. We have a medical kit onboard but obviously bring any specialised medicines you need. Please can you also bring a doctors letter or prescription if they contain opiates or any substances that might arouse the interest of customs or immigration officers (we have been raided several times)
  • Travel sickness remedy (Stugeron is my personal favourite)
  • Music – ideally not CD’s but USB or Bluetooth players/phones perfect
  • BEVERAGES!!!!!! House favourite is gin plus there is a wine cellar…..
  • A day back pack can be useful plus a dry bag for money and phones

Please DO NOT BRING

  • Shower or bathing towels (we have ample onboard). You might want to bring something special but they all take up space…….
  • Bedding – we have pillows, sheets, duvets onboard etc
  • Hard (non-folding) bags or suitcases – they are a nightmare to store and crash around
  • Unicorns or pink flamingos (we have one onboard already plus some lilos)
  • Heavy boots or shoes with metal heel protectors, stilettos etc (unless kept in your cabin for private use and/or carried ashore)
  • Life jacket and harness – unless special needs (please discuss with me) these are provided with plenty for everybody
  • H/H VHF or EPIRB (but PLB’s OK as we only have 2)

Spring/Autumn

  • Waterproofs (full set of sailing oilies)
  • Sea boots (e.g. Dubarry)
  • Winter sailing gloves
  • Base layers
  • Small neck towel
  • Woolly hat
